Ossington Strip & Pho Tien Thanh

Bang bang ice cream at 93 Ossington near Argyle was closed on Monday when I decided to explore the Ossington strip on Civic holiday. I decided to eat lunch at Pho Tien Thanh at 57 Ossington.

I got the #9 pho dac biet. It’s their house special beef noodle soup. It’s composed of noodles, well done beef, rare beef, beef brisket, tripe and tendon along with bean sprouts and a lime wedge in a broth. A small is $8.20 including tax. The service is slow however everybody speaks Vietnamese so the food is authentic. There’s only afew pieces of meat so in terms of portions to prices I prefer Pho 88 at Bamburgh Circle in Scarborough.

Top Saigon

This past Sunday my friends and I went to Top Saigon at the Finch-Leslie Plaza for lunch. The decor reminds me of a Hong Kong style cafe and the lighting is quite bright. My friend said that it was a Thai-Viet restaurant but to me it had a more Chinese or Hong Kong cafe feel to it. Most of my friends ordered a curry dish. Their curry options include curry lamb and curry duck.

I had a small Curry Chicken Noodles in Soup ($6.25). The dish is potatoes, chicken and noodles in a curry soup broth with onions as garnishing. The curry is really good although I would have preferred the chicken to be deboned. Their quality of potatoes could be better but their chicken is quite good. The portions are quite large since I wasn’t able to finish the small portion. Overall, this is a good restaurant to try if you’re in the area and craving curry.

Bahn Mi Boys

My friend and I went to Bahn Mi Boys for dinner this past Monday. A university friend recommended this place to me. I’ve been here before with a high school friend who got the Five Spice Pork Belly Bahn Mi. The five spice pork belly bahn mi has braised pork belly, carrots, cilantro, pickled radish and house mayo. She liked it alot but she couldn’t finish it.

My friend had the Grilled Chicken Bahn Mi ($5.49). The grilled chicken bahn mi has grilled chicken with garlic soy, Asian BBQ sauce, carrots and cucumber. She liked it.

I had the Duck Confit Bahn Mi ($7.49). The duck confit bahn mi has braised duck leg with onion chutney, carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, and house mayo. It was delicious. I liked how the flavours combined together and that there was this non-spicy kick to it that reminded me of lemongrass and fish sauce. The duck was quite tender.

I also ordered the kimchi fries ($5.99) for takeaway for Tuesday’s lunch. Kimchi fries are fries with kimchi, mayo, green onions and pulled pork on top. It was slightly too salty for me and there wasn’t enough kimchi on it but other than that it was very tasty.

If you’re in Downtown Toronto and you’re craving Vietnamese food, then this is the perfect place to go to.
